Muslim doctor says gay patients are 'twisted and prey on society'

By Rebecca Camber

A LEADING Muslim doctor Is facing disciplinary action over a letter
In his name describing his gay and transsexual patients as 'twisted'.

Dr Muhammad Slddlq, president of the Islamic Medical Association,
claimed to represent 99 per cent of British Muslims when he sent a
letter to a doctors' magazine stating gays were 'preying on society'
and Irresponsibly spreading disease.

The GP 15 now being Investigated by Walsail Primary Care Trust and
could be reported to the General Medical Council for the comments
made In a letter to Pulse.

But In a bizarre twist as he faces a disciplinary hearing next week,
Dr Slddlq's family claimed that It was all a joke by his son, Khubalb
Slddlq. He has since written to Pulse suggesting that he had produced
the original letter as a 'cynical spoof', which had been signed by
his father In error and sent to the magazine. Although his son has
publicly claimed responsibility, last night It was understood that
the doctor had already privately conceded to bosses that he was the
author.

Dr Slddlq, who trained 40 years ago In Pakistan and works at the
Luqman Medical Centre In Walsall, wrote: 'They are preying on society.

'There 15 punishment and fines If you throw rubbish or filth In the
street. The gays are worse than the ordinary careless citizens of
this country. They are causing spread of Illness by their
Irresponsible behaviour. They are at the root of many sexually
transmitted diseases.

'They neither need sympathy nor help.

What they need is a stick of law to put them on the right path, mend
their ways and behaviour and to protect society from their ravages.'
The letter also criticised transsexuals, referring to a depressed
patient undergoing a sex-change as 'twisted'.

When contacted by Pulse Dr Slddlq made no attempt to deny his views.
The magazine then wrote a story, reprinting extracts from the letter.
This was seen by the PCT, which launched an Investigation.

Chair of the Muslim Health Network, Dr Khalld Wyne, said: 'Sexual
orientation should not Interfere In a GP's Judgment of the health
needs of a patient.'

Last night a spokesman for the gay lobby group Stonewall said: 'It 15
an Indication that pockets of homophobia exist In the health service.
These are very offensive comments.'

Dr Slddlq was unavailable for comment last night. A Walsall PCT
spokesman said: 'We have grave concerns about the views attributed to
Dr Slddlq and have met with him to discuss them. We will be
considering which action to take In due course.'
