Evaluated information for the NHS ESTRADIOL NASAL SPRAY AERODIOL
Summary
• Aerodiol is a new formulation of estradiol which is given by the nasal route for
postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
• Nasal estradiol, 300 micrograms (two sprays)/day has been shown to be as effective as
estradiol tablets (2 mg /day), or patches (50 micrograms/day), in relieving postmenopausal
symptoms and reducing the frequency of hot flushes.
• Adverse effects of the nasal formulation include prickling and itching at the site of
administration, rhinorrhoea and epistaxis, in addition to other adverse effects normally
associated with HRT, such as mastalgia.
Women who have persistent rhinorrhoea or other nasal problem, that may be worsened by the
use of a nasal spray, should probably avoid this product as trials have not included such
individuals.
• Aerodiol is not licensed for osteoporosis at present.
• Nasal estradiol offers an alternative to other types of HRT already available. The price is
comparable to HRT using patches or gel, although at doses higher than the recommended
initial dose, it may be more expensive than patches.
• Women with an intact uterus will require progestogen treatment in addition to the estradiol.
