Hands up those who remember Calpernia Addams. Who? Calpernia Addams... young, very attractive, slight build, tall, swinging hips, red hair and green eyes... you know. OK. Who remembers Barry Winchell? Yes, Private Barry Winchell, the gay soldier who got bashed to death by some of his army mates for being a poofter.

You got it in one. Except...

The fact is that Winchell, killed for being gay, wasn't gay at all, at least not in the traditional Harvey Fierstein sense of the word. Barry Winchell, who had only ever dated biological women before, was in love with a woman with the condition of transsexualism who had not yet gone through a surgical affirmation of her sex.
