Vision and Mission of the Australian WOMAN Network

Our Vision

That all people have the opportunity to fulfill their lives in peace and without discrimination relating to the diversity of their sexual formation, development or assignment.

Our Mission

To fulfill our vision by:
1. Educating and informing people about the diversity of human sexual formation, development and assignment – and, in particular, the predicament of transsexualism – so as to free our world of the ignorance, fear and prejudice that has been borne by those people who have experienced difference in this aspect of their lives and the people who love them;
2. Protecting and reforming the law of Australia so that it shall honour and not prejudice those people who experience diversity of human sexual formation, development and assignment – and, in particular, the predicament of transsexualism – and the people who love them.
3. The establishment of an effective and efficient Health Service dealing with those living with transsexualism.

STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES

AN EFFECTIVE STRATEGY TO MEET THE URGENT AND SPECIAL HEALTH AND WELFARE SUPPORT NEEDS OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH TRANSSEXUALISM

FOR AND IN SUPPORT OF:

THOSE WHO HAVE HAD SEX AFFIRMATION SURGERY;

THOSE WHO DUE TO AGE OR THROUGH FINANCIAL, HEALTH OR OTHER HARDSHIP ARE IN NEED OF SEX AFFIRMATION SURGERY BUT HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO UNDERGO THAT REHABILITATIVE TREATMENT;

CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS WITH TRANSSEXUALISM;

THOSE CONTEMPLATING TRANSITION OR SEX AFFIRMATION;

THE FAMILIES, FRIENDS, LOVED ONES AND OTHERS AFFECTED BY THE EXPERIENCE OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH TRANSSEXUALISM;

HEALTH AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICE PROVIDERS.

WE AVOW AND AFFIRM:
THAT THE MEDICAL TREATMENT OF THE PREDICAMENT OF TRANSSEXUALISM, INCLUDING PSYCHOLOGICAL SUPPORT, ENDOCHRINOLOGICAL TREATMENT, THE TREATMENT OF SECONDARY SEXUAL CHARACTERISTICS BY COSMETIC AND OTHER MEANS AND SEX AFFIRMATION SURGERY, BE PUBLICLY FUNDED THROUGH MEDICARE AS FOR ANY OTHER CRITICAL LIFE-THREATENING CONDITION;

THAT STATE HOSPITAL BASED CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE BE FORTHWITH ESTABLISHED IN RESPECT OF TRANSSEXUALISM AND OTHER CONDITIONS OF VARIATION IN HUMAN SEXUAL FORMATION AND THAT SUCH CENTRES ACT TO BETTER EDUCATE MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS AND GOVERNMENT CONCERNING THE HEALTH AND WELFARE NEEDS OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH TRANSSEXUALISM AND THEIR FAMILIES;

THAT A GOVERNMENT FUNDED AND SUPPORTED GENERAL, SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITY EDUCATION PROGRAM BE ESTABLISHED AND CONDUCTED ON A REGULAR BASIS THROUGHOUT AUSTRALIA TO DEMYSTIFY AND EXPLAIN THE PHENOMENON OF TRANSSEXUALISM WITH THE GOAL OF MINIMISING THE DESTRUCTIVE EFFECTS OF IGNORANCE AND SHAME IN RESPECT OF THIS ASPECT OF HUMAN DIVERSITY;

THAT ALL PEOPLE LIVING WITH TRANSSEXUALISM, ESPECIALLY CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS, BE ENTITLED TO RECEIVE TREATMENT FOR THE CONDITION WITHOUT A DIAGNOSIS OF MENTAL ILLNESS OR DISORDER AND THAT TRANSSEXUALISM BE RECOGNISED FOR WHAT IT IS – A SELF-DIAGNOSED NATURAL VARIATION IN HUMAN SEXUAL FORMATION IN WHICH THE INDIVIDUAL NEEDS TO UNDERGO SEX AFFIRMATION TREATMENT IN ORDER TO UNIIFY THE CONFLICTING SEXUAL DIFFERENTIATION OF THE INDIVIDUAL’S MIND WITH THE BALANCE OF THE INDIVIDUAL’S SEXUALLY DIFFERENTIATED BODY;

THAT TRANSSEXUALISM AND OTHER INTERSEXUAL CONDITIONS BE REMOVED FROM THE AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION DIAGNOSTIC AND STATISTICAL MANUAL OF MENTAL DISSORDERS.

THE ESTABLISHING OF ONGOING DIALOG AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATE HEALTH AND WELFARE PROVIDERS TO ENSURE THAT THE SPECIAL AND CRITICAL HEALTH AND WELFARE NEEDS OF ALL PEOPLE WITH TRANSSEXUALISM, THEIR FAMILIES AND ASSOCIATES ARE MET IN A SKILLED AND TIMELY MANNER - IRRESPECTIVE OF AGE, FINANCIAL STATUS AND STAGE OF SEX AFFIRMATION.

WE BELIEVE AND KNOW TO BE TRUE THAT-

1. We are women;
2. Transsexualism is a condition not an ID;
3. That the sex assigned to us on the basis of the biology of our reproductive organs is incongruent with our true sex determined on the basis of the biology of our brain and expressed by our innate sense of self;
4. That this incongruity constitutes a treatable intersex condition known as transsexualism which is a biological variation of human sexual formation;

And

We affirm our confidence in the common law and medical research which themselves establish the basis for these beliefs.

We affirm our commitment to the community we were brought up in and which our Families are a part of.

We are a health and support network for all women of all ages who experience transsexualism , their significant others , families , friends and associates.
